Production Planning And MRP

Production Planning turns approved demand, BOMs, routings, stock balances, and capacity readiness into material requirements, supply suggestions, and planning exceptions.

Open Production -> Operations -> Production Planning.

What The Workspace Does

Use the planning workspace to:

  • run MRP for a business unit, planning horizon, warehouse, or item scope
  • review demand that was included in the planning run
  • check component shortages and coverage
  • convert production-order suggestions into planned production orders
  • mark procurement, transfer, and expedite suggestions for follow-up
  • review planning exceptions before releasing work to the floor

Running MRP

Click Run MRP from the Production Planning page.

Use a focused scope where possible:

FieldMeaning
Business UnitLimits the run to one operating branch or plant.
Horizon From / ToDefines the demand and supply window.
WarehouseLimits stock availability and material requirements to a warehouse.
ItemLimits planning to one finished item or component chain.
Planning ModeIdentifies the run as MRP, forecast, or manual planning.

After the run completes, the workspace opens the focused run so users can review demand, materials, suggestions, and exceptions without manually filtering every tab.

Review Tabs

TabPurpose
RunsShows planning run headers, status, horizon, and high-level totals.
DemandShows sales-order or forecast demand included in the run.
MaterialsShows gross requirements, available quantity, open supply, net requirement, and shortage status.

Report Shortcuts

The Planning Reports menu opens Reporting with the relevant Production Planning report selected. Row actions on Runs, Materials, Suggestions, and Exceptions also open report-specific views with the current planning run, item, warehouse, or status filters prefilled.

Report CodeUse It For

Use Reporting presets when the same filter set is needed repeatedly, for example a daily material shortage view by business unit and warehouse.

Dashboard Widgets

The General Dashboard production section summarizes the same planning controls for management review:

  • Planning Scenario Comparison compares recent scenario runs by demand, supply suggestions, open exceptions, blockers, and material shortage percentage.
  • Planning Exceptions shows the latest open exceptions from planning runs.
  • Planning Exception Action Queue groups open or acknowledged exceptions by action area, severity, status, quantity impact, and maximum age.

Operating Rules

  • Run MRP after demand, BOM, routing, warehouse, and stock setup are ready.
  • Resolve missing BOM and routing exceptions before converting production suggestions.
  • Treat shortage exceptions as blockers unless procurement, transfer, or expedite suggestions are accepted for follow-up.
  • Convert only production-order suggestions directly from the planning workspace; procurement and transfer suggestions should move through their owning primitives.
  • Re-run planning after material receipts, stock transfers, cancelled demand, or changed BOM/routing data.
  • Review conversion audit reports before releasing production orders to shop-floor execution.
